14 jan 1649 ano - Charles I Beheaded (1649)

Descrição:

This was the high point of the English Civil War in which the Parliament, directed by Oliver Cromwell, declared the king guilty of treason (something that would have been absurd a century ago) and beheaded him. England became a republic under Cromwell until 1660. The civil war, and in particular this one act, cemented Parliamentary power over the king, which makes this event more important that the restoration of Charles II in 1660 because Charles’ son, James II, was eventually undone by an act of Parliament. (Palmer 160)
