The Japanese Imperial Army intended to suspend Australia's supply line with America. To accomplish that, they built bases in southwest Pacific islands.

After a series of battles, Japan was experiencing their first major losses in Asia and the South Pacific. They were defeated once again the Battle of Midway, which urged them to abondon their plans to capture Fiji, Samoa, and New Hebrides.
