Archduke Franz Ferdinand Carl Ludwig Joseph Maria of Austria, the heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary is assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

Austria-Hungary, supported by Germany, issues an ultimatum to Serbia, whose secret intelligence supported the assassins. Serbia does not accept, as it would mean loss of independence.
