This party opposed extension of slavery into the western territoriy especially ones got from Mexico. David Wilmot from Pennsylvania in 1846 Brough in congress his idea; Wilmot Proviso, proving his point to ban slavery in the western territory. The party originated in New York. The Democratic state convention that was held, opposed the Wilmot Proviso.
