Hello, my name is Mark and I’m a 36-year-old, proto-middle aged, firmly middle class, middle manager, father of one; I like early Medieval history, PG Wodehouse, Radio 4, West Ham, brogues and sailing.
I also go skateboarding.
It all started (again) when I took my six-year-old son to the local skatepark so he could ride up and down on the ramps on his scooter and generally get in everyone’s way. The first time we went, I took the Sunday Times to sit and flick through while Henry careered off the various transitions, periodically coming out from behind my newspaper to help him up. But, having spent a chunk of my teenage years as a skater – thoroughly and utterly devoted to it, spending every school night and weekend on a skateboard from the age 14 to 18 – it wasn’t long before the long-dormant urge returned. Maybe it was a hardwired attraction to the sound of the wheels skimming along the concrete and the pop of a board, or the nagging curiosity as to whether I still could do any tricks, or simply the desire to somehow step back to a blissfully free teenage period. Or perhaps it was just the harbinger of a mid-life crisis.
