Danish Vikings had besieged Paris and the Frankish king Charles the Simple had to buy them off by granting them a large part of northern France, now called Normandy, and at the time it was called Northamnland. From here they could sail into the Mediterranean and seize Sicily from the Muslim Arabs in 1060-1090, while other Normans would cross the English Channel to defeat Anglo-Saxon forces in 1066.
