President Ronald Reagan nominated her to fill the vacancy left on the Supreme Court by the retirement of Justice Potter Stewart. Described by Reagan as a “person for all seasons,” O'Connor was confirmed unanimously by the Senate and was sworn in as the first female justice on September 25, 1981.
