David is ascertained here to be ~ 18 years

Consider the following:
*David was too young to be enlisted in the army at 20 yrs
*David was a fully grown youth who;
- was old enough to be left alone with sheep in known lion and bear country
- was too small to wear Sauls armour (as he was head and shoulders above any other man) but large enough to accept Jonathans armour. (1 Sam 18/3) It would have been totally ridiculous for Saul to get David to try and wear his armour if he was only a youth of 14ish.
- was only Sauls armour-bearer in training or he would had accompanied Saul into war
- David was to marry Sauls daughter shortly afterwards indicating he was of marrying age and not a mere boy!
