Against his father's wishes, Nikolai leaves the army at 18, after only one year of service. Ulfric's displeasure is well known, and the arguments between Nikolai and Ulfric are nowhere near as quiet and discreet as between his father and older brother before him. They are often seen speaking harshly, Nikolai challenging Ulfric at every turn openly.
