Romes first conquest were over the various tribes and Greek colonies of Italy.In November 2004, a Greek farmer in the town of Orchomenus, Greece chanced upon an important find in his cotton fields: a monumental column meant to commemorate the victory of Roman forces under Lucius Cornelius Sulla over the armies of King Mithradates VI Eupator of Pontus in 85 BCE. Though they knew the name of the site, historians and archaeologists have long pondered exactly where the important Battle of Orchomenus took place.
