Rutherford discovered the existence of protons and the nucleus of an atom. He shot Alpha Particles through a thin sheet of gold foil during his Gold Foil Experiment. He found that most particles passed through, some repelled, and some bounced back. This meant that the atom was mostly empty space with a positively charged area in each. Rutherford was from Britain and New Zealand and lived from 1871 to 1937.
