This piece was composed between 1480-85. The title translates to "Hail Mary...serene Virgin”. This motet is Josquin's earliest datable piece, and potentially his most popular. In this motet, it is as if the composer - on his own behalf, and also for his singers, his patron, and the congregation - is speaking directly and modestly to the Virgin Mary, pleading for his soul. It is very heavy with imitative polyphony. Each part is equally interesting and important, the texture changes continually, and the melodies unfold smoothly and logically, yet with constant rhythmic and melodic interest.
