This piece was composed during the 1430s. The title of this ballade translates to “If my face is pale”. He composed this while he was serving as master of the chapel at the court of the duke of Savoy.

French influence:
He composed the music to freely suit each line (ie does not strictly adhere to ballade form), and also uses frequent syncopation with an angular and leaping contratenor line.

English influence:
The pervasive consonance with only a few ornamental dissonances, the prevalence of thirds and sixths, relatively short and well-articulated phrases, relative equality between cantus and tenor melodies, and triadic figures that suffuse the final melisma.

English and Italian influence:
Smooth, mostly stepwise melodies in cantus and tenor, along with the primarily syllabic treatment of the text.
