When Byzantine Emperor Leo III gave orders to remove an image of Christ at the Palace of Constantinople, the removal of all holy images in Eastern Church ensued. This conflict between those who venerated holy images, or icons, and those who opposed them was resolved by the Second Council of Nicaea in 787.
