**Even though many colonies were founded on the basis on religions, the influence of religion began a decline in the 1700s.** This made preachers want to reaffirm the role of religion in life. The Great Awakening started as a grass roots movement where preachers like George Whitefield and Johnathan Edwards preached in open air services. The Great Awakening was the first big movement in America. It united people regardless of class and religious denomination and set the tone for religious and political individualism that would follow in the Revolutionary era.
