At the time of the twentieth century, Niels Bohr was one of the most philosophical major scientist. He came up with the concept of complementarity in 1928 (Faye, 2002). Bohr believed that complementarity could explain many great philosophical issues of the time. This concept was believed to illuminate the mind over body problem, that was first brought to light by Frenchman Rene Descartes (Faye, 2002). Bohr also thought that this could provide the difference between organic and inorganic matter and it could better explain other classic schools of thought like subject over object, reason versus passion, and free volition versus causality (Faye, 2002). This idea was one of the most important contributions to quantum physics.
Bohr was highly educated and often spoke as if the goal of complementarity was to reconcile opposites (Faye, 2002). He compared this to the duality of the Chinese philosophy, yin and yang. Bohr felt so strongly about this philosophy that the symbol is marked on his tombstone.
