Nixon wanted to establish relations with China and his Security advisor, Henry Kissinger, supported him. This desire brought Nixon good press in the 1972 election. He visited China in 1972, which ended a 25 year stint of no communication with China. Nixon's visit to China was calculated move to drive a deeper wedge between the two most significant Communist powers - the PRC and the USSR.
