Based on immigration status, parents in Texas were being charged for their children’s education. Advocates claimed that the state violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. This landmark case declared it unconstitutional for states to deny undocumented children access to public education. Specifically, schools were prohibited from requiring students to reveal their immigration status as well as have social security numbers.
