The camera dolly was invented in 1907 by Segudo de Chomon. He experimented with cameras on wheels which eventually led onto him creating the camera dolly that we know of today.

The technique has evolved since its creation and now the dolly allows the cameraman to sit on the side of the camera while it moves, allowed for more complex shots.
