In Kongo, a syncretic cult was founded by Dona Beatriz. She claimed to have been possessed by St. Anthony of Padua who had become popular in Kongo after being introduced by the Portuguese. She stated that Jesus Christ was African, Kongo was the true holy land, and that heaven was for Africans.
