In 1549 Francis Xavier, a Jesuit, arrived in Japan opening a mission seeking converts. This mission was fairly successful, even converting powerful daimyo, and by 1615 there were 300,000 Christians in Japan. However, this mission generated strong backlash, especially by those seeking to preserve native over foreign religions. Thus shoguns started several anti-Christian campaigns, and the religion was reduced to a secret, underground religion practiced by very few.
