The Spanish found little use for the island of Hispaniola, but soon gained interest in the mainland due to discovery of ample silver. Spanish explorers arrived, introducing disease which already weakened the empire prior to its demise. However, after various conflicts in Tenochtitlan, the Spanish seized the city in 1521 and starved it into surrender, ending the Aztec empire.
