Soon after Christopher Columbus' first sighting, Spanish explorers gained an interest in control of the Americas. Therefore, Bartholomew Colombus, Christopher Colombus' younger brother, decided to found this settlement as the first seat of Spanish colonial rule in the New World. This settlement remains the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas.
