With the capture of the city of Granada, the Emirate of Granada was defeated and annexed by Spain. This event finished off the Reconquista, a long, painstaking process of restoration of Spain to Christianity that lasted nearly 800 years. Additionally, this event permanently drove the last of Islam out of Western Europe.
