It was passed by George Grenville in 1764, it banned the American colonists from using and colonial or paper money as legal tender to pay off their debts. Almost all colonial Americans had to use paper money, which was worth less than an English pound sterling, to pay their debts. The act had made sure that the British merchants would not be paid with paper money thus boosting their profits.
