Lyell's book outlined his theory that the formation of the earth's crust took place trough several small changes occurring over vast periods of time. He determined that the formation of Mount Etna he had observed earlier was not because of a sudden large eruption like others had believed, but instead several eruptions over a large period of time compounding on one another. Lyell adopted Hutton's idea of uniformitarianism where geographic features are created over a long period of time by geographic forces. Lyell would later go on to revise his "Principles of Geology" 12 times over the course of his life.
