In October 1962, the US was on the brink of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union had placed missiles in Cuba. In response, the U.S. decided to blockade Cuba and not invade. The Soviets had submarines in Cuba and the US dropped depth charges to prove that they had been seen. Arkhipov was in charge of the submarines and demanded them not to fire. In the end, Khrushchev agreed to remove missiles from Cuba, and the US agreed to stop the blockade in Cuba and remove missiles in Turkey.
