In 1973, Pinochet came to power after overthrowing Allende with the CIA and the military. Pinochet reversed many of the socialist policies from Allende and created a free market. In the 1980s, the economy was good. Many leftists were brutally surpressed and Pinochet lost the re-election in 19998.
