Student demonstration against the Chinese government as they wanted democratic political reform. Xaioping brutally suppressed the demonstration using military forces that were brought in from the countryside. Xaioping feared that Beijing troops could have been politically contaminated. Many students were massacred and Xaioping received much international criticism for this but, remained in power until his political retirement in 1992.
