After Xaioping came to power in 1977 after Zedong's death, he was known for his economic reforms. He transformed the economy into a free enterprise and a more capitalist market economy. He opened up China to international trade and improved relations with many countries. It was overall economically beneficial, but did create unrest due to class inequality and the desire for a democracy which led to the demonstration at Tiananmen Square.
