The founding of Modern Israel has its origins in the Zionism movement. The Zionism movement was caused by Jews in the Russian Empire, in the late nineteenth century who called for there own state. Later after World War One Great Britain took over Palestine and stated its intent to establish a Jewish homeland there. Starting in 1929 the Arabs and the Jews fought openly in Palestine. To appease the Arabs, Britain limited Jewish migration to Palestine. During World War Two many Jews entered into Palestine illegally because of the Holocaust. After World War Two the U.S. took up the Zionist cause and in November 1947 the U.N. voted to partition Palestine. The Arabs fought against the Zionist forces but by 14 may 1948 the Jews had secured full control of their U.N.-allocated share of Palestine and Israel was proclamed a state.
