During the first half of the twentieth century, the press clashed with the government. However, in 1951 when president Aleman established Freedom of the Press Day for Jose Garcia Valseca, the press began to succumb to the government. Jose Garcia Valseca, who was a close friend to the government, became the owner of 37 daily newspaper, and so the self censorship began.
