In 1907, with the encouragement of Father Podgorsek of Frontenac, Kansas, the Slovenians raised $1800 dollars with the intention of establishing their own parish.

Bishop Lillis discouraged this effort due to small number of families and meager resources, but they persisted. In 1908 Slovenians formed the Carnolian-Slovenic Catholic Church Society of St. Joseph’s. At the same time, Fr. Josepha Kompare arrived from Europe and was able to purchase three lots between 5th and 6th and Ohio. New real estate included 2 cottages, one of which was converted to a church, the other for a rectory. In the rear church, a hall was built as a school and meeting place.
