After the death of Eben Blachly, the directors of Freedman's University agreed to sell the 700-acre tract of land belonging to the school. A resident of Quindaro, known by the name of Aunt Mahalia Endicott, took action. She walked across the bridge to Parkville, and met with President John McAffee, the founder of Park College, in Parkville, Missouri. McAffee had in his possession Blachly's school documentation, in which Blachly requested that 133 acres of the land be perpetually set aside for use. With papers in hand, Endicott convinced the school directors to release that area of the property to the A.M.E. conference. Corvine Patterson assisted in the effort. In 1881, the university and the 133 acres allotment became an officially chartered college preparatory and vocational institution known as Western University. In her honor and due diligence, Endicott served on Western University's Board of Trustees.
