In 1892 Bethany Medical Center was founded as the first Protestant Charity Hospital west of the Mississippi. It was founded by John Hoyt and Reba Freeman at 312 Washington. The hospital started with 15 beds and 5 physicians. By the second year it had 45 beds 3 wards and 35 on the staff. In 1917 it moved to a new five story building. The name of the hospital was changed to Bethany Methodist in 1922. Bethany School of Nursing was built at this time. The first cardiac intensive unit in the world opened in 1962 under Dr. Hughes W. Day (1915-1990). Dr. Day (1939 KU Medical School graduate) coined the term code blue and developed an emergency blue colored cart that carried vital equipment for cardiac patients. In 1970 the nursing program was closed and in 2001 the hospital was closed.
