1 jan 1890 ano - The Public Schools Act, 1890 is passed

Descrição:

Arguments about language, religion, and education rights were breaking out in eastern Canada. In 1871, New Brunswick decided to change their education system and they decided to stop funding schools in NB which taught Catholicism and French. Catholics protested back, petitioning that the federal government protect the educational rights of the Catholic, who were a minority, but the federal government denied their request for help. Since 1870, Manitoba provided support for the public school systems of the French and Catholic and the English and Protestant, but in the 1880s, many Métis had left Manitoba, and since they made up a great portion of the French-speaking Manitobans, the few Métis that were left were outnumbered by the English Protestants when more started settling in Manitoba. Since the English Protestants were now the majority of people in Manitoba, they were not too happy in supporting public schools that were French and Catholic, as the Protestants were not French or Catholic. As a result of this, the government of Manitoba passed the Public Schools Act, 1890, which stopped government funding for the Catholic Schools, and also eradicated the French language from being one of the province's official languages. The Catholics of Manitoba wanted to take action, and tried to take up this issue with the federal government, but they once again refused to have any involvement. Manitoba was already resisting the federal government's control, and John A. Macdonald was worried that if the federal government got involved in this issue, Manitoba would continue to resist the government's control to a higher degree.
