The result of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, Yukon is created out of the Northwest Territories. After gold was discovered on the Klondike River in 1896, tens of thousands of mostly American people flocked to the area we know today as Yukon. The area's population had increased exponentially, but this prompted fears in Canada that the US would eventually try and assume control of that area. Yukon was already one district of four in the Northwest Territories, but on June 13, 1898, the Yukon Territory Act was passed and Yukon became a Canadian territory in its own. Dawson City, the heart of the gold rush was decided as the capital, and by 1908, they had a fully elected council with 10 members. By the early 1900s when the gold rush began to disappear, Dawson City was no longer the prosperous busy city it once was, so by 1953, the capital of Yukon became Whitehorse instead.
