20 jul 1871 ano - British Columbia Joins Confederation
Descrição:
British Columbia, a colony founded in 1858 was the result of the Fraser River Gold Rush. In 1864, British Columbia had established representative government. In 1866, they merged with another colony, the colony of Vancouver Island. In May of 1868, 1 year after Confederation, Amor De Cosmos (a politician from British Columbia) organized the Confederation League. The objective was to create responsible government in BC, and for BC to join Confederation. There were multiple factors which contributed to this action being taken. One was that BC was afraid that the Americans would try to annex their colony, and when the US had purchased Alaska in 1867, those fears increased, so by joining the Dominion of Canada, they would not have to worry about that happening anymore. BC was also promised a railway which would link them to the rest of Canada, which was a very good move for them, financially. The Confederation League were set on these 2 goals of responsible government & Confederation. Just 4 months later in September of 1868, the Confederation League came up with 37 resolutions which set the framework and terms for a union with Canada. One of the terms was that Canada would help them build a transcontinental railway in order to connect BC to Ontario. The BC assembly and the federal Parliament approved, guaranteeing that the railway would be finished in 10 years, and they passed the terms in 1871. British Columbia was officially Canada's 6th province.
