19 nov 1869 ano - Transfer of Rupert's Land & The North-Western Territory from the HBC to the Dominion of Canada

Descrição:

When the US had recently purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867, the British & Canadian governments were worried. They thought that this meant that the US would eventually try to take control of all the territory to the north & west of Canada (including Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory), which belonged to the Hudson's Bay Company), but they believed that that Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory (Which covers Yukon, the mainland of the Northwest territories the northwestern side of the mainland of Nunavut, the northwestern part of Saskatchewan, and the northern part of Alberta today) should be Canadian. So with a little help from Britain, the government of Canada purchased Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory from the HBC for £300,000. The HBC was not in the best palce financially, at the time, so by selling their territory to the Canadian government, they were slowly getting back on their feet. The HBC signed the deed that officially transferred the ownership of Rupert's Land to the Crown on November 19 in 1869, but the transfer did not take effect until much later on July 15 in 1870, because of the Red River Resistance's disruption.
