Descrição:

(Photo: Kansas City Stockyards at their peak in 1923.)

In 1871 The Kansas City Stockyards were first established in Wyandotte City between the Kaw River and Kansas Pacific tracks. At first the price was set by the railroads, but with the advent of the Kansas City Livestock Exchange, livestock owners could sell at whatever price they could get. In 1878 the stockyards expanded from 13 acres to 55 acres, including docks on the Missouri side. Its peak year was 1923 when nearly three million cattle, 3 million hogs, 1 million sheep, and nearly 50,000 horses and mules were received at its docks. Half of the cattle and hogs were slaughtered at Kansas City packing houses making it second only to Chicago in the processing of meat. The Flood of 1951 devastated the stockyards and it never fully recovered. J.B. Dillingham was President of the stockyards from 1948 to 1991 when it closed. An automobile highway bridge that travels just north of the stockyards connecting the two Kansas Cities is named after him.
