In 1865 the State Line Depot was constructed on the Wyandotte side of the State line by joint effort of the Pacific Railroad and UPRR-ED. This solidified border railway cooperation between Kansas City, Missouri and Wyandott, Kansas (Morgan, p 465). The State Line Depot lasted until the wood structure burned down in 1892. The building was 150 feet in length, 60 feet wide and two stories high with sixty apartments upstairs. State Line Depot restaurant was described as the best food in Kansas City.
The Pacific Railroad from St. Louis to Kansas City, Missouri was a southern gauge railway (4 feet & 8 1/2 inches) which did not match up with the wider northern gauge (5 feet & ½ inches) UPRR-ED in Kansas. The State Line Depot gave passengers a place to enjoy dinner while the train cars were removed and transferred to new wheel trucks when traveling in either direction (Leland, p. 117).
