In early April, an incident at the Tereos d'Escaudeuvre sugar refinery, near Cambrai, caused organic pollution in the rivers located near the factory, notably the Scheldt. Ten days later, many fish were found dead in Belgium, still in the Scheldt river. Described by environmentalists as "the biggest ecological incident in 20 years". (Teller Report)
