we associate the Renaissance with the birth of old and classical ideas; indeed, the word itself means rebirth in French. Therefore, in order to trace the start of this time period, we must trace the person who started this movement to go back to classical periods. This person was Francesco Petrarca, or Petrarch. It was he who popularized the sonnets we recognize as from the Renaissance, he who began to direct us to the reversion to Roman ideals.
