The fundamental differences that distinguish post-World War II models from the Model T were the self-starter, the closed all-steel body, the high-compression engine, hydraulic brakes, syncromesh transmission and low-pressure balloon tires.

In the 1930s, there were such innovations as the automatic transmission and drop-frame construction. In addition, with some exceptions, cars were made much the same way in the early 1950s as they had been in the 1920s.

To face the previous problems with the standstill's market and production, General Motors innovated planned obsolescence of product: a planned triennial major restyling to coincide with the economics of die life and with annual minor face-liftings in between.

The principal aim was to make feel costumers dissatisfied enough to change his car and to improve to a more expensive new model before the life's car ended.
