1 jan 1911 ano - Yates Branch YWCA

Descrição:

In 1911 (App), Yates Branch YWCA was established. This facility became a haven for male and female youth in the Northeast Area due to being barred from participation in the Central YWCA and YMCA. The Friends of Yates Center, located at 14th and Garfield Avenue, is a continuation of Yates Branch and is the oldest social service institution started by African Americans in the Northeast Area.

Ms. V. Hardee Middlebrooks became the Executive Director and provided the initial leadership. Ms. Gladys Burks succeeded her, becoming the next Executive Director and continued to make the YWCA a haven for both female and male youth in the Northeast Area.

In 1982, the Board of Directors of the YWCA closed the branches in Kansas City, Kansas. When this action was taken, Ms. LaDora Pilcher Lattimore, assumed the role of Executive Director of Friends of Yates, and at that time, a governing body and legal Board of Directors was established. Under the dynamic leadership of Ms. Lattimore, Friends of Yates continues to be an integral part of the Northeast Area and has positioned itself to "serve the present age."

The Yates Branch YWCA was named in honor of Mrs. Josephine Silone Yates, who was born in 1859 in Mattituck, New York. She graduated from the Rhode Island State Normal School with honors in 1859. She, along with Anna H. Jones, founded the Women's League of Kansas City in 1893. She served as the second president of the National Association of Colored Women in 1901, serving until 1906.
