2 ago 1990 ano - Invasion of Kuwait

Descrição:

WHY DID SADDAM HUSSEIN INVADE KUWAIT IN 1990?
ECONOMIC:
-Kuwait was another country that was rich in oil. After the Iran-Iraq war, Saddam had $80 billion of debts to pay so desperately needed more money. However, as Iraq was a member of OPEC (Oil Producing and Exporting Countries) the amount of oil it produces was controlled so prices did not change. If Iraq had more oil fields, it would be allowed to produce more oil within OPEC's limits.
-Kuwait had more access to the Persian gulf.

TERRITORIAL:
-Saddam had blamed Kuwait of drilling for oil under the Iraqi border.
-Iraq thought that they should have claimed Kuwait in 1961 after the British left.

MILITARY:
-Saddam wanted a victory after the failure of the Iran-Iraq war that many of his own army generals were blaming him for. He needed to show them that he was a strong leader.
-Saddam wanted to show off Iraq's military power - it was the largest army in the gulf with many chemical weapons.

On the 2nd of August 1990, 300 000 Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait and took over the country.
