Kohmeini was an Islamic Political activist. He was exiled from Iran in 1964 but returned in 1979 once the Shah had left. He wanted Iran to abolish the monarchy which heavily relied on foreign influence and form a new Islamic state.
He was the "Supreme Leader" of Shia Iran, therefore getting a say on new laws. He banned many western influences (alcohol, films etc). Mass trials were held to execute supporters of the Shah.

Khomeini despised the secular government of Iraq. He told Shia Muslims to act before "it was too late".
