15 fev 1979 ano - Iranian Revolution

Descrição:

WHY WAS THERE A REVOLUTION IN IRAN IN 1979?
ECONOMIC:
-There was a big gap between the rich and poor in Iran
-Iran had suffered economically as a result of Britain's actions against them in 1951.
-The Shah's modernisation programme had failed to: ensure villages had piped water and electricity, failed to decrease infant mortality rates, failed to impact the high level of adult illiteracy.

FOREIGN INFLUENCE:
-Many Iranians were angry that the West had forced the Shah to remove Mossadeq who was very popular.
-They were angry at the West for stopping buying Iranian oil.

RELIGIOUS:
-Islamic fundamentalists criticised the western influence on society - it was viewed as unIslamic.
-Ayatollah Khomeini (a Muslim fundamentalist) was popular amongst the Iranian people.

DISLIKE OF THE GOVERNMENT:
-The Shah used violence when trying to stop protesters in September 1978 - over 500 were killed.
-The Iranian secret police (SAVAK) were used brutal tactics to remove opposition ti the Shah.

-I think the most important reason for the Iranian revolution in 1979 is the foreign intervention from the west. This is because the British and Americans forced the popular PM, Mossadeq out of power as they viewed him as a threat. The Iranian people were angry that the West had so much influence over their country, causing them to attempt a revolution.

EVENTS:
-In January 1978, the Shah left the country to receive cancer treatment and never returned. The army declared support to the revolution and a referendum was held. The results were in favour of abolishing the monarchy and declaring a new Islamic republic.
