The media used propaganda to glorify Saddam, presenting him as the protector of the Arab world as well as Iraq. Statues and portraits were displayed everywhere. His birthday (28/04) was made a national holiday.
A referendum on his presidency voted 99% in support of him.
In schools children were brainwashed along with members of Baath youth organisations.
Censorship was also used to stop criticisms of the government getting out. The death penalty was introduced for anyone who criticised the government.
The judicial system was under the complete influence of Saddam.
