WHY DID KHRUSHCHEV PUT MISSILES ON CUBA?
BARGAINING: Missiles on Cuba posed a threat to the US making it much more likely for the Soviets to succeed in bargains with the US. For example, the US had recently put missiles in Turkey which the Soviets wanted to be removed.
DETERRENT: As Cuba was an ally of the Soviets, Cuban missiles worked as a deterrent against another Cuban invasion or an attack on the USSR in Europe. MAD (mutually assured destruction) -> no one really wanted nuclear war as it would mean mass destruction on the whole planet.
SHOW OF STRENGTH: Khrushchev was seen as weak so this act made him look bolder and stronger.
CLOSE THE GAP: Khrushchev was worried that the US were ahead in the arms race and that they had more weapons. This helped to "close the gap", making it less likely that US would make a first strike.
SCARE THE US: Cuban missiles had a range that could destroy much of the US.
